The recent crises generated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine are already impacting European society’s social and economic cohesion. Its ability to ensure the well-being of all its members, to minimise development gaps, to remove financial and social barriers, and to avoid discrimination, marginalisation, and cultural differences depends on the security and resilience of the EU and the use of appropriate instruments to provide the necessary support to different categories of population in need. Moreover, vulnerable groups in the border regions of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) are categories of population who confront everyday experiences shaped by local and regional economic, security, and social realities that are unique in the European landscape. In other words, our project aims to approach EU studies in an innovative and multidisciplinary way, to identify the forms of manifestation of social support in the times of crisis (2020-present) and to highlight their role in generating security and solidarity between people and ensuring the cohesion of groups located at the border regions of CEE, elements which underpin the development of sustainable strategies for a cohesive European society.
In this context, the Summer School with the theme Solidarity, cohesion and social support in the European Union, which will take place within the Jean Monnet module “Solidarity, cohesion and social support in the international context”, coordinated by Ass. Prof. PhD. Mihai Marian, and it is aimed at bringing together young students from several European countries, university professors, and local and foreign specialists.
Why a summer school?
A summer school is a good opportunity for young people to spend part of their vacation with fellows of the same age and with the same passions and interests. The desire to acquire extra knowledge and some new skills in a more informal setting than that of the university, and to interact with young people like them, is the main reason why students enrol in such activities. Summer schools are divided into two main categories, depending on the topics they address. There are summer schools where you can learn a subject from scratch, but there are others where you can deepen what the participants learned in college or are really passionate about.
The advantages of “graduating” from a summer school can be noticed immediately or later in the career. The main advantages consist of favouring the access of young people to a quality non-formal and informal education, as well as the integration of all participants in a youth network with potential, which will be a stimulating environment for developing personal skills, but especially the skills of active involvement in change and community development. On the other hand, summer schools that do not require the absence from normal courses can also have beneficial effects in the perspective of a successful career. Moreover, in a summer school, self-knowledge is encouraged through the art of persuasion, public speaking, by stimulating creativity, and by initiating students in the field of social entrepreneurship.
Participating in this summer school will enable students to interact with local, regional, national, or international specialists on topics concerning the EU’s borders and the development of the regions close to them, and to learn how to use the instruments of cooperation and neighbourhood to obtain a sustainable social cohesion. Interacting with local authorities from Oradea has as its objective setting up the premises to identify elements of theoretical and practical connections needed to build the mechanism of joint security, development, and integration, according to the European values.
There is no participation fee for the summer school, meals are provided by the organizers.
